FAQs

Can physical therapy cure vertigo completely?

Physical therapy is highly effective, especially for vertigo caused by vestibular disorders such as BPPV. Many patients experience significant relief or even complete resolution of vertigo symptoms following therapy. However, the success of treatment depends on the specific cause of vertigo. For example, BPPV often responds very well to canalith repositioning maneuvers, while vertigo related to neurological conditions might require longer-term management. Chronic or complex cases might require ongoing therapy or additional medical evaluation. Overall, physical therapy aims to reduce symptoms, improve balance, and enhance quality of life.

How long does vertigo therapy take?

The duration of vertigo therapy varies depending on the severity of symptoms, the underlying cause, and how consistently the patient follows their treatment plan. Many patients begin to notice improvements within a few weeks of starting therapy, especially with conditions like BPPV. Some individuals may require several weeks to a few months of regular sessions and at-home exercises to achieve significant relief. Your physical therapist will continuously assess your progress and may adjust your therapy plan to help you recover as efficiently as possible.

What are some common exercises used to treat vertigo?

Several targeted exercises and maneuvers are used in physical therapy to treat vertigo, especially vestibular-related dizziness. These can include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Epley Maneuver: A series of guided head and body movements designed to reposition dislodged calcium crystals in the inner ear back to their correct location.
  • Semont Maneuver: A quick, side-to-side movement technique that also helps move crystals out of the semicircular canals.
  • Brandt-Daroff Exercises: Repetitive movements performed at home that habituate the brain to dizziness-provoking stimuli help reduce symptoms over time.
  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises: These involve focusing on a stationary or moving target while moving the head to improve visual stability and reduce dizziness.
  • Balance and Gait Training: Exercises designed to improve coordination, posture, and walking stability to prevent falls.
  • Habituation Exercises: Controlled exposure to movements or positions that trigger dizziness to help the nervous system adapt and reduce symptoms.
A wonderful rehab facility. It’s clean, bright, has up-to-date equipment that’s well maintained, and terrific staff. My physical therapist, Anvi Patel, was incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and gently pushed me to gain full mobility in my left arm after a fracture of my humerus.

I’ve been going to Excel Physical Therapy for about 5 or 6 months now, and I can honestly say there hasn’t been a single day where I didn’t smile or laugh while being there. The entire team makes you feel so comfortable and welcome it truly feels like family. Everyone is incredibly friendly, and even the other patients always have such a positive attitude that it makes the whole environment uplifting. The front desk ladies deserve a special mention because they are seriously the sweetest! They always greet me with a smile, and an hello and always ask how I’m doing, and even take the time to listen if I’ve had a rough day. It’s those little moments that really make a difference. The therapists are amazing! patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your progress. Even when I leave sore or find myself complaining during exercises, they always motivate me to push through and remind me that it’s all part of becoming the best version of myself. I’m truly so grateful to have met such caring, kind, and dedicated people. Excel Physical Therapy doesn’t just help heal your body, they lift your spirit too. I can’t thank them enough for everything they’ve done for me. I would recommend this place to absolutely anyone looking for a team that cares, motivates, and makes you feel at home every step of the way.

I can’t recommend Ivy Rehab on Washington enough. Justin and the team are incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in your recovery. I came in with double patellar tendinitis—at 26, I couldn’t even stand comfortably on the PATH train after overworking from commuting and running. The exercises were tough, but week by week I got stronger. In just six weeks, they had me back in running shape and feeling better than ever. Definitely ask for Justin—he manages the clinic and ensures you’re well taken care of, with support from the rest of the friendly staff. The downstairs area is spotless, and the upstairs space is excellent too. Plus, Elizabeth at the front desk is always warm and welcoming. Highly recommend! Not to mention the clear advantage of them being able to take me right away — versus everyone else in Hoboken.

I have had many excellent experiences with Ivy Rehab in Island Park, NY. It was clear to me from my very 1st appointment that the whole staff genuinely cared about my recovery. I have been working with Matthew Moskowitz for several years as I have had multiple surgeries. I cannot thank Matt & Ivy Rehab enough for giving me my life back. This facility and the whole staff are outstanding. I also thank Torin Bacon for his care during my first few years in recovery. It was his initial care that kept me going back to this facility. Both Torin and Matt have been very accommodating. They developed & deployed a strategic plan working in sync to address very complicating conditions that I suffer from. I am grateful to the entire team for their incredible support, patience, and care.

My 94 year old mother broke her neck in a car accident. I was afraid she would not recover. Thanks to the Ivy Rehab in Naperville and the tender care of AK and his team she is "still kicking at 95, although not so high as she says." Our sincere gratitude and well wishes.

ABC Pediatrics has been amazing! They did a great job of assessing our child's needs and recommending just the right therapy ( OT, PT and speech) for our child's success both at home and at school. We have enjoyed participating in their community events and getting to mingle with other parents who share common struggles. We are amazed at how much more social our little one is since working with these therapists. Thank you ABC Pediatrics for supporting us through every milestone!

Therapeutics Unlimited is tje best PT Facility I’ve ever been to. Steve has taken care of and helped to heal our entire family (as we took turns hurting ourselves). He is a gifted and very knowledgeable professional who loves sharing his knowledge with his patients. The staff is kind, fun and so well trained. It will continue to be my PT place of choice by far!
My evaluation was very thorough. Both PTs shared their insights and came up with a terrific treatment plan. I have a very complicated case and my pain management doctor referred me here. I felt muscles I never knew. Gentle stretching was terrific. I look forward to decreasing pain and improving function. Raymond is great.

After months of shoulder pain due to frozen shoulder, they were able to help me get some relief. I saw numerous different PTs, as well as assistants, and they were all great. They helped me with exercises, stretches and dry needling. The staff was amazing in every aspect. Customer service is beyond expectations. The entire staff is helpful and friendly. This place is great!

I had a wonderful experience at Excel Therapy. I went in after a knee replacement and had Nicholas as my therapist. He was so professional, extremely knowledgeable and caring. I was concerned that while doing exercises I would totally be on my own, not knowing if I was doing them correctly . I have to say Nicholas always checked on me to be certain I was properly doing all exercises. He always changed my exercises depending on what I needed at that time for a fast recovery. I could not be more pleased with results of my therapy at Excel and would certainly return in the future if needed.Thank you for the wonderful care.

My son has been seeing Ms Stephanie for speech for several months and has made so much progress. He always is excited to go back and “play”. Stephanie has also been great with communicating his progress to us, setting goals each week to work on at home, and giving ideas of activities that can help.

We've been bringing our 3 yr old here for almost a year now. Maria is amazing with her and has definitely worked her magic to get our shy kiddo to open up to her. Our little one went from barely talking to talking a bunch and does so well. We've also interacted with Lindsey and my kiddo adores her. Everyone is always so nice and happy when we're there.
