What is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is the portion of the inner ear and brain that helps control your balance and equilibrium. If damaged, the vestibular system can make you feel unbalanced – like you are suddenly spinning, tilting, or floating.

Causes & risk factors of vestibular disorders.

Vestibular disorders affect about 35% of adults over the age of 40 and account for 60 million doctor visits every year. Even as much as 5% (3.3 million) of children from ages 3-17 have a dizziness or balance problem. Request an appointment.

Common disorders that can affect the function of the vestibular system are:

Symptoms of vestibular issues.

Symptoms for vestibular dysfunction can be brought about my many forms of pathology, and can be differentiated by their anatomic origin as either central (within the brain), or peripheral (within the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear). Symptoms of vestibular issues include:

Vertigo
Dizziness
Imbalance
Lightheadedness
Disequilibrium
Oscillopsia (visual changes while moving)
Nystagmus
Ocular tracking difficulty and eye fatigue
Nausea
Falls
Difficulty walking

Symptoms of a dysfunctional vestibular system can last a few minutes to a few hours or more and may come and go.

How Vestibular Rehab Works

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on helping your body adapt to dysfunction in the vestibular system. It involves a series of rehabilitation exercises tailored to address your unique symptoms and needs.

Rehabilitation Exercises

Exercises in vestibular therapy focus on improving balance, eye movement coordination, and postural stability.
Gaze stability exercises help improve your ability to maintain a steady visual focus during head movements.
Habituation exercises reduce vestibular dizziness by gradually exposing you to the movements that trigger your symptoms, allowing your brain to adapt.

Adaptation and Compensation

Through vestibular rehab, the brain learns to adapt and compensate for the loss of function in the inner ear, helping to improve motion tolerance and reduce dizziness.

Training and Practice

Ivy Rehab for kids in Bensalem is the best!!!!! IRFK has a wonderful staff. Every therapist is excellent! Each therapist has their own unique style and twist on how they work with your child but this is what makes them great. They all collaborate with one another and discuss ideas on how to improve for next visit. They always manage to keep the work fun for our children. IRFK is absolutely amazing. We love it here!!!

I came to Northern Physical Therapy because of Vertigo which I had never had before. Lisa was so knowledgeable & helped me feel comfortable, she took the time to explain what was going on & showed me how we could fix it. She helped me out tremendously! Just year ago we were struggling to understand and communicate with our 3 year old, which became unbelievably frustrating for everyone involved. We had different SLP’s in Virginia Beach with little progress, UNTIL we found Ms. Lauren! She’s been a heaven sent for my son, and had him making progress faster than we’d ever imagined. Today, we (as well as friends and teachers) can understand him fully- and I can’t explain what a relief that’s been. I began seeing Katherine when I was almost halfway through my pregnancy for pelvic floor PT and she was knowledgeable and so helpful. I believe my delivery was as smooth as it was partially because of the work we had done together to prepare for it. I came back to see Katherine after giving birth to continue pelvic floor PT. She listened and adjusted my exercises every week depending on how I was feeling. I have recommended this PT office to many people because they are great people!

Great experience rehabing my fractured shoulder. The staff was knowledgeable and compassionate. They made sure at the end of 6 weeks I was clear on follow up therapy while I'm away on vacation for 8 weeks. I really appreciate that. I am able to do everything I did before the break I just need to increase my strength. I highly recommend! The therapists, assistants, and receptionist all worked as a team and had my best interests at heart.

Ethan was outstanding to work with after my arm injury. He took the time to piece together my symptoms, took immediate steps to ease the pain and then came up with a plan to strengthen the area around the injury to make sure it didn’t recur. Highly recommended!
