What is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is the portion of the inner ear and brain that helps control your balance and equilibrium. If damaged, the vestibular system can make you feel unbalanced – like you are suddenly spinning, tilting, or floating.

Causes & risk factors of vestibular disorders.

Vestibular disorders affect about 35% of adults over the age of 40 and account for 60 million doctor visits every year. Even as much as 5% (3.3 million) of children from ages 3-17 have a dizziness or balance problem. Request an appointment.

Symptoms of vestibular issues.

Symptoms for vestibular dysfunction can be brought about my many forms of pathology, and can be differentiated by their anatomic origin as either central (within the brain), or peripheral (within the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear). Symptoms of vestibular issues include:

Vertigo
Dizziness
Imbalance
Lightheadedness
Disequilibrium
Oscillopsia (visual changes while moving)
Nystagmus
Ocular tracking difficulty and eye fatigue
Nausea
Falls
Difficulty walking

Symptoms of a dysfunctional vestibular system can last a few minutes to a few hours or more and may come and go.

How Vestibular Rehab Works

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on helping your body adapt to dysfunction in the vestibular system. It involves a series of rehabilitation exercises tailored to address your unique symptoms and needs.

Rehabilitation Exercises

Exercises in vestibular therapy focus on improving balance, eye movement coordination, and postural stability.
Gaze stability exercises help improve your ability to maintain a steady visual focus during head movements.
Habituation exercises reduce vestibular dizziness by gradually exposing you to the movements that trigger your symptoms, allowing your brain to adapt.

Adaptation and Compensation

Through vestibular rehab, the brain learns to adapt and compensate for the loss of function in the inner ear, helping to improve motion tolerance and reduce dizziness.

Training and Practice

Denise Dumoulin is extremely knowledgeable and was great to work with. I highly recommend Ivy Rehab in Grand Blanc. Aleece Passow is way beyond any other PT I have ever worked with. Her understanding of body mechanics is outstanding. Her observations of your body and why it isn’t working is exemplary. I had emergency back surgery which resulted in the fusion of my back from the S1 through T2. There were 5-years of misdiagnosing before the surgery. Aleece helped me understand what I needed to achieve to undo the 5 years of my body compensating for the issue and how to protect the rest of my back from future injury. I went from not understanding why I needed PT to a believer in the gift a great PT really is. Aleece changed the outlook of my future. And no….that isn’t an overstatement. Aleece is the gem in the medical field that combines a love of the work with an education, a deep sense of how a body works and hands on knowledge you didn’t know existed. And then she teaches you how to heal yourself! Combine her talents with a well supplied clinic with a very nice pool and you will feel better in no time.

I’ve gone to IVY physical therapy for a few years now. I go in my back act up. I do the physical therapy because I do not want surgery and I do not want shots. And the physical therapy that they give me works. They gave me a list of exercises to do at home, which I do but sometimes life just gets in the way and I can’t do it and I need a jumpstart. So the doctor sends me to physical therapy to do it all over again. I have spinal stenosis in my lower back. They helped me so much they Understand when I explain things to them. And the people are just great they’re friendly. They’re courteous. They’re helpful.

Nice relaxed friendly atmosphere. Came for OT with Leslie, who is great, for my finger therapy. She's so patient and understanding, and was helping me out with my painful shoulder issues before I officially started getting PT for my frozen shoulder. Matt has been getting me through PT, so calm and patient, putting up with my moans and groans as he works my shoulder, just so I can actually lift it above my head! Thank you guys for what you do! I can’t say enough about the Ivy Briarcliff team. I went to the practice after having gotten 3 months of PT outside of NY. Chris D and Bethany R were really great at evaluating my neck condition and finally getting my muscles to to open up. They recommended exercises that were easy to do at home via the app. The PT aides (Jaclyn and Avery) were very supporting and encouraging.

Our son has received OT and Speech for years, but a little over a year ago we started services at Ivy in Canton. He has had so much progress at Ivy, adding several new foods (huge improvement!) and improving his fine motor skills. His speech has skyrocketed since starting at Ivy with new words, varying sentence structures, and much clearer speech. We are so glad we made the switch to Ivy Rehab in.Canton!

ABC is unlike any therapy provider I've ever seen!! They put such a focus on supporting and lifting up the children they see and their families! The support for their staff is absolutely amazing, which in turn, means that the support the staff offers to their patients is amazing! I can’t say enough good things about this place . From the moment I stepped into the office to register my son , the front desk receptionist Chewy , was a delight and super helpful. They work around the clock to make sure that my son is getting the best possible care and help he needs. Tori and Julia have been amazing with my son , they’re so sweet and do such a great job . He even asks when he’s going to see them on days he doesn’t have therapy . We’ve started to see results within the short time he’s been in speech and occupational. I started at Ivy rehab about 4 weeks ago and I was assigned Matthew, Matthew gives you the best care possible to fit your needs, he's caring, gentle and very attentive.

Ivy Rehab Monroe is amazing! My 8 year old was treated and Matt Fleming and his staff could not have been better. They were so kind and patient with her, and they explained everything to us in detail that was easy to follow and understand.
