FAQs

Can physical therapy cure vertigo completely?

Physical therapy is highly effective, especially for vertigo caused by vestibular disorders such as BPPV. Many patients experience significant relief or even complete resolution of vertigo symptoms following therapy. However, the success of treatment depends on the specific cause of vertigo. For example, BPPV often responds very well to canalith repositioning maneuvers, while vertigo related to neurological conditions might require longer-term management. Chronic or complex cases might require ongoing therapy or additional medical evaluation. Overall, physical therapy aims to reduce symptoms, improve balance, and enhance quality of life.

How long does vertigo therapy take?

The duration of vertigo therapy varies depending on the severity of symptoms, the underlying cause, and how consistently the patient follows their treatment plan. Many patients begin to notice improvements within a few weeks of starting therapy, especially with conditions like BPPV. Some individuals may require several weeks to a few months of regular sessions and at-home exercises to achieve significant relief. Your physical therapist will continuously assess your progress and may adjust your therapy plan to help you recover as efficiently as possible.

What are some common exercises used to treat vertigo?

Several targeted exercises and maneuvers are used in physical therapy to treat vertigo, especially vestibular-related dizziness. These can include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Epley Maneuver: A series of guided head and body movements designed to reposition dislodged calcium crystals in the inner ear back to their correct location.
  • Semont Maneuver: A quick, side-to-side movement technique that also helps move crystals out of the semicircular canals.
  • Brandt-Daroff Exercises: Repetitive movements performed at home that habituate the brain to dizziness-provoking stimuli help reduce symptoms over time.
  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises: These involve focusing on a stationary or moving target while moving the head to improve visual stability and reduce dizziness.
  • Balance and Gait Training: Exercises designed to improve coordination, posture, and walking stability to prevent falls.
  • Habituation Exercises: Controlled exposure to movements or positions that trigger dizziness to help the nervous system adapt and reduce symptoms.

When I was referred to IvyTherapy I was physically broken. I was constantly in pain and had limited use of my right shoulder, right hip, and left shoulder. Aaron went to work on me providing individualized, patient centered care. Aaron takes the time to understand each patient and what they hope to accomplish from the physical therapy. Aaron works with patients to accomplish their goat. Aaron is very knowledgeable and understands the underlying causes of pains and limited mobility. Before I started physical therapy with Aaron I was sleeping in my recliner because it hurts less than sleeping in my bed. I have one more physical therapy session left and I’m sleeping in my bed and has been pain free. I have maximum use of my right shoulder, right hip, and left shoulder and no pain. I would strongly recommend Ivy Therapy and Aaron for all you physical therapy needs.

This is by far the best place to go to for physical therapy. I was in a lot of pain and didn’t even realize how much my morale changed because of it. Chaundree was my physical therapist and he was so kind, very knowledgeable and literally brought me back to life. I’m not one for physical therapy, I usually skip out after a few sessions but not only did Chaundree help me but the whole team was a true delight to be around. Kida at the front desk was so helpful and understanding when I first called and was in a lot of pain. Hamza, Vicky, Soya, Mark and Kaylyn helped me work through some of my exercises and pushed me in the best way. I can’t thank this team enough for what they did for me. I highly recommend this place. If I ever need physical therapy again I won’t go anywhere else.

PTW- Montgomeryville is an excellent place to go for PT. Usually PT places are boring, sad, and lack energy. This place is far from that. The physical therapists keep it exciting and help take your mind and focus off your pain. The place is clean, sanitary, and organized. The staff are friendly, helpful, and fun!
I started going to the Mahwah Excel PT location since June to rehab a broken bone in my hand and had an awesome experience with Bryan Del Rio. He is professional, highly trained, and competent. The entire staff is friendly, caring, and professional. I highly recommend the Excel Mahwah location.

While doing rehab after a meniscus knee surgery, the therapists at the Midlothian Ivy location, were informative, professional and extremely caring throughout my entire time there. This included the individuals at the front desk and every single person I came in touch with at each session, that give me back the mobility in my knee. Their care, knowledge and obvious enjoyment in their profession showed through in every single session. I cannot thank them enough for their healing hands and hearts! Tracey Seamster

Sorry, I never post reviews, but I just had to for my first PT experience ever. TLDR: I love this place. The team at Ivy Rehab in Williamsburg is amazing — Megan, Bing, Declan, and Efrain feel like family. They want you to achieve success and recover from your injury. My patellar tendon rupture in late January 2026 felt incredibly overwhelming both physically and mentally, but starting PT here in February, and the numerous subsequent visits, have felt so rewarding and I've made significant progress in my healing. At this location, you'll laugh, be seriously physically challenged (they don't call it pain and torture for nothin'), and meet PTs who care about you and want to make you walk normally again (in my case!). I do love this place! Check them out for your PT needs.

Everyone at the facility is absolutely amazing. They’re sweet. They’re kind and they’re flexible with my schedule to be able to get my child in and they work very well with me since my baby has been going there when she started she didn’t know how to talk at all, she’s only been there a year and she talks up a storm now we’re still working on how she pronounce this things, but they have helped her come a long way. I’d recommend this facility to everyone and I went through a house, fire and lost things in. The whole facility was very kind. It was donating things to us. Them 100%

We feel so very fortunate to have found ABC Pediatric Therapy. They are so kind and helpful. Nikki has guided us through each and every step of the grant process. The grant has made weekly speech affordable for our family even through the ups and downs of covid. If you're considering ABC, don't let financial concerns keep you away. They will help you find a way to make it happen and you won't regret the fantastic therapy that your child receives.
Response from the owner:Thank you Stephanie for the kind words. We love helping in any way we can! Nikki is so wonderful with helping with financial barriers!
