FAQs

How does the McKenzie Method differ from traditional physical therapy?

Unlike traditional physical therapy, the McKenzie Method emphasizes self-treatment and self-management techniques. The assessment focuses on determining the directional preference of movements and positions that either alleviate or worsen symptoms. This approach allows patients to take an active role in their recovery and empowers them to manage their pain independently with tailored exercises.

Is the McKenzie Method safe?

Yes, the McKenzie Method is a safe, non-invasive approach to treating musculoskeletal pain. It does not involve surgery, imaging, or medication, and the method is guided by a certified clinician who ensures the treatment plan is appropriate for your specific condition. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and minimize future recurrence of symptoms through controlled movements and exercises.

What conditions can the McKenzie Method treat?

The McKenzie Method is effective for treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, and ankle pain. It focuses on identifying mechanical issues within the musculoskeletal system and creating a personalized treatment plan to address these conditions without relying on medication or surgery.

I was actually bummed when I finished PT because I enjoyed the clinic so much. Thank you for taking the time to share your review! – The team at Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy, Blue Bell – South ★★★★★ I highly recommend Excel Physical Therapy in Westfield! After I fell skiing and injured my knee, the team took such wonderful care of me—with genuine attention, compassion, and expertise. Choosing a PT practice can be overwhelming, and I’m so grateful I found Excel. The entire staff is fantastic, including John, Josh, Christian, Sara, Ebony, and especially my primary therapist, Aaron. Aaron brings a kind, thoughtful approach to treating the whole patient. He supported me through pre-hab, talked through my options as I considered surgery, and helped me prepare both physically and mentally. I ultimately chose to move forward with ACL repair and a partial meniscectomy, and the pre-hab made a huge difference in my post-surgery recovery. I returned to Excel after surgery, and now—just three months later—I’m blown away by how well I’m doing. I owe so much of that progress to this team.If you’re unsure where to go or hesitant about starting PT, look no further than Excel. Aaron and John are exceptional therapists who provide hands-on care and a customized program that evolves as you do. Josh, Christian, and Sara are always there to guide you through your exercises, and Ebony keeps everything running smoothly—from scheduling appointments to helping navigate insurance—and is simply a joy to see at every visit. On top of the incredible care, the environment is upbeat, welcoming, and always has a great playlist.Excel Physical Therapy is truly the best—thank you all for helping me get back on my feet!Response from the ownerThank you for taking the time to share this review, it means so much! – The team at Excel Physical Therapy – Westfield – East Broad St ★★★★★ I have recovered from hip surgery. Highly recommend!Response from the ownerThank you for the fantastic rating, we’re so grateful! – The team at Ivy Rehab for Kids – Canton ★★★★★ The service I received at Synergy at Staunton was awesome! I hobbled in using a hemi walker and after a lot of intense treatment, I walked back out, able to go about my life as normal. All the staff were very friendly and concerned about my needs. Those therapists know what they’re doing. I saw several people who helped me with various issues due to my automobile accident in which I was run over by a pickup truck. I was affected from head to toe, so it took a lot of patience and expertise to treat all my injuries. Jake did the most of my care and answered questions, advised me and instructed me so that I should be able to continue my rehab at home. He was very knowledgeable about the issues I had, whether muscles, nerves or bone and joint problems. He was very patient and the care was amazing. I just can’t say enough about the care I experienced at Synergy. Thank you.Response from the ownerIt’s great to hear this feedback! Helped me feel better and gave me an individual plan to keep getting better. I highly recommend Denise and Ivy!Response from the ownerThank you for your kind words; we appreciate your feedback! – The team at Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy, Grand Blanc ★★★★★ I have experienced many types of so called rehab. They all seemed to say they could help you with whatever ailed you at the time. Even though time is important in the healing process, wasting my time is not. I have found this to be true in a lot of the agencies I have attended.. However, with Ivy their knowledge is impeccable and their hands-on approach is A number one. In short, they have it all.Response from the ownerThank you so much for sharing your thoughts, we appreciate you! – The team at Excel Physical Therapy – Westfield – East Broad St ★★★★★ I saw Brittany Wilmoth for pelvic floor PT. Everyone, and I mean everyone there was so kind. There was flexibility in scheduling & ease of accessibility to my provider. It was clear to me from my very 1st appointment that the whole staff genuinely cared about my recovery. I have been working with Matthew Moskowitz for several years as I have had multiple surgeries. I cannot thank Matt & Ivy Rehab enough for giving me my life back. This facility and the whole staff are outstanding. I also thank Torin Bacon for his care during my first few years in recovery. It was his initial care that kept me going back to this facility. Both Torin and Matt have been very accommodating. They developed & deployed a strategic plan working in sync to address very complicating conditions that I suffer from. I am grateful to the entire team for their incredible support, patience, and care.Response from the ownerThank you for your kind words; we appreciate your feedback! – The team at Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy – Island Park ★★★★★ The therapists are amazing and have done wonders for my pain and a balance issue that I had. Gave me great at home exercises, which have help immensely. Also helped me with some exercises for planters fasciitis! I would highly recommend Rachel or Kevin. Shannon greets you with a pleasant smile always and has answers when you have questions about billing or for appointments!! If you need physical therapy, call Ivy Rehab Fishers!!! ★★★★★ I want to give a huge shout out to my PT Mary-Beth at “Back in Action Physical Therapy” on Kelly RD in Apex.My sincere gratitude for her wealth of experience and her positive impact that achieved my goal, saving me from undergoing additional anesthesia to gain additional range of motion (ROM) on my knee after knee surgery in my 4th month post op. Not only has Mary Beth a kind, sweet and encouraging personality, but she is also intuitive to your needs and really listens to and knows when to push, trying to archive the best outcome. My Dr wanted me at a 120-degree range coming from an 87-degree knee bend. Mary Beth worked with me 2 times a week on gaining range of motion for 4 weeks and was able to prevent ROM, and getting me to -127 degrees, resulting a 40-degree knee bend. What an accomplishment! I’ve had 2 other PTs at 2 different places prior and have them to compare to. I can honestly say that hands down, Mary-Beth is the best!Response from the ownerIt’s great to hear this feedback! Thank you for taking the time to share your review! – The team at Back in Action Physical Therapy, Apex ★★★★★ After my shoulder surgery, when I had to pick a place to go for my PT, I wasn’t sure where to go. I really was only aware of the chain places, like ATI and Athletico. But I couldn’t drive for about a month so I chose PTSIR in Orland Park because I thought, if for some reason my wife was not available to drive me, it’s only about a 2 mile walk. I could do that.Sometimes you’re smart and sometimes you’re just lucky. Here I was lucky. This place, and these people, are outstanding. Personable, professional, & proficient in the science/art of PT. People had told me: “keep up with your therapy. You’re gonna hate it but you gotta keep going.” I got news for you. I didn’t hate it. I actually enjoyed it.Why?1. It’s working. I have about 75% mobility & strength back in my shoulder.2. These people, Melanie & Linda, they are so engaged in your situation and your progress and so friendly that we actually have conversations and laugh. It’s hard sometimes to show your vulnerabilities (even tho it’s a result of surgery) to strangers. They made it easy.I went to another place about 18 months ago, before surgery was decided. And they were good…friendly, seemed competent. But not nearly as engaged or invested in how I was progressing. Again, they were fine. But on a scale of 1 to Mel, they were like a 2.So thank you Linda for being so friendly and open and helpful. And thank you Mel. You have been simply wonderful. ★★★★★ The staff and facilities are excellent. From the time I walked in I was treated genuine concern and care highly recommend great people and great service 😊😊👍🏿💯 I am sorry to say I missed some names. But at this time I would like to mention Alex, Anthony, Amy, Lauren and of course Mocaela who is real pleasure to talk with 😊although she not very android savvy 😂😂Response from the ownerThank you for the great review, we really appreciate it! – The team at Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy, Bala Cynwyd – North ★★★★★ I’ve been coming to this office twice a week for the past few months for shoulder rehab after a snowboarding injury, and the whole team has been amazing! Megan, my physical therapist, has done an incredible job helping me strengthen my shoulder and manage instability. Emilia has also been fantastic in guiding me through the exercises. Everyone here is friendly, professional, and truly invested in their patients’ recovery. Highly recommend!Response from the ownerThank you for sharing this with us! – The team at Park Sports Physical Therapy, Brooklyn – Williamsburg ★★★★★ Always an positive and productive experience. I’ve been to PT before and it can become boring and tedious very fast. That’s not the case here. All of the PTs are exceptionally knowledgeable and motivating. They’re constantly monitoring your progress and modifying your recovery program so you see results. The staff is always kind, helpful, and approachable.I originally went in for should pain when throwing. I ended up having a tear, but after 3-4 weeks of coming here (bo surgery needed) I was making pain free throws from the outfield again.Response from the ownerThank you so much for your positive feedback, it means the world to us! – The team at The Physical Therapy & Wellness Institute, Blue Bell! js_loader
