FAQs

How does the McKenzie Method differ from traditional physical therapy?

Unlike traditional physical therapy, the McKenzie Method emphasizes self-treatment and self-management techniques. The assessment focuses on determining the directional preference of movements and positions that either alleviate or worsen symptoms. This approach allows patients to take an active role in their recovery and empowers them to manage their pain independently with tailored exercises.

Is the McKenzie Method safe?

Yes, the McKenzie Method is a safe, non-invasive approach to treating musculoskeletal pain. It does not involve surgery, imaging, or medication, and the method is guided by a certified clinician who ensures the treatment plan is appropriate for your specific condition. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and minimize future recurrence of symptoms through controlled movements and exercises.

What conditions can the McKenzie Method treat?

The McKenzie Method is effective for treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, and ankle pain. It focuses on identifying mechanical issues within the musculoskeletal system and creating a personalized treatment plan to address these conditions without relying on medication or surgery.

Great staff. Always seen on time for our appointments. We have seen a few different therapists as our first left on maternity left. But we have had a great experience with all of them!

My doctor could not have referred me to a better physical therapy practice and location. Dr. Baver was so incredibly a perfect match for me regarding concussion management therapy. His expertise, compassion, and support made what initially felt like an overwhelming recovery journey so feasible. His knowledge and willingness to explain my condition, progress, setbacks, etc. was very helpful and also helped me have realistic goals outside of appointments.
The team at the 1608 Walnut Street location as a whole has so much respect, kindness, knowledge, and a spirit of collaboration it's the kind of work culture that sets standards and other companies could be trained upon.
They're committed to client care and care for one another and I highly recommend these folks.

The team at Ivy Rehab is amazing. I tore my ACL and worked with Ivy (primarily Kevin) for nearly a year on my knee. Despite rehab generally being a difficult and at times frustrating process, Kevin really made things enjoyable. I looked forward to attending my sessions and the good conversations we had. Kevin and his team made me feel comfortable the whole time. And, Kevin and his team were very adept at working to adjust my rehab as time went on to try to address the issues I was facing and work through them. I highly recommend Ivy Rehab to anyone in need of their services!
The staff was caring and compassionate, and was patient with my toddler. They gave us the tools we needed for our toddler to have appropriate emotional regulation. 10/10 recommend!

I can't say enough positive things about the Park Sports PT team in Williamsburg! I have been working with Megan (without and 'H') and Amelia (Amili Amili Amili) for the past few months rehabbing a torn ACL. Their fun and knowledgeable approach to rehab makes trips to Park Sports a highlight of my week. I can always can count on Megan to set me straight and alleviate my unfounded anxiety of re-injury. Also, shout out to Emmanuel who makes scheduling a breeze and Taden who always jumps in to fit me into his schedule when I have to make last minute appointment adjustments. 5 / 5 stars!

Kevin has been amazing with helping me with my back pain. He is a great listener and makes sure everything is explained. My pain has decreased significantly and he really makes sure I’ll be pain free for the future. His front desk is also amazing she is so prompt and very sweet to talk to.
I’ve been seeing Joe at Excel PT for a shoulder issue, and I couldn’t be more impressed. Joe uses a wide variety of techniques and has an incredibly deep knowledge of both modern and traditional therapy approaches. He combined dry needling, cupping, with classic strength and mobility work, and the results have been amazing—my shoulder already feels significantly better.

Beyond Joe’s expertise, the entire staff at Excel PT is an absolute joy to be around. Every session feels positive, welcoming, and genuinely supportive.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Joe and the whole Excel PT team to anyone, and if I (regrettably!) ever end up with another injury, I’ll be going right back without a doubt.

Highly recommended! 💪

I recently was a patient at Excel Physical Therapy in Oakland for my plantar fasciitis. From the first day that I started there, I was always greeted with a warm welcome by all of the staff. My PT Kelly is a consummate professional and her attention to detail is spot on. Kelly always took the time to listen to my concerns and created a personalized treatment plan for me. This level of care that I received made me feel like I was in good hands and that my progress was a top priority. Going to PT didn’t feel like a job and that can only be attributed to the staff that has created a warm and welcoming environment. Overall, my experience at Excel physical therapy was exceptional. Thank you to Kelly, Jeff and John for your professionalism and support in my recovery process.
I would strongly recommend Excel Physical Therapy in Oakland to anyone in need.

This place is clean and professional. Very knowledgeable. I went in for a shoulder issue.

Jamie saw me and ran me through numerous tests and motions to get figured out what I had going on. She created a plan for me to strengthen it. She came up with exercises I hadn't considered. She is very knowledgeable and easy to talk with.

The rest of the staff is warm and welcoming from start to finish as well. I'm thoroughly pleased with my experience at this location and I'll be coming here again in the future as needed.
