FAQs

How does the McKenzie Method differ from traditional physical therapy?

Unlike traditional physical therapy, the McKenzie Method emphasizes self-treatment and self-management techniques. The assessment focuses on determining the directional preference of movements and positions that either alleviate or worsen symptoms. This approach allows patients to take an active role in their recovery and empowers them to manage their pain independently with tailored exercises.

Is the McKenzie Method safe?

Yes, the McKenzie Method is a safe, non-invasive approach to treating musculoskeletal pain. It does not involve surgery, imaging, or medication, and the method is guided by a certified clinician who ensures the treatment plan is appropriate for your specific condition. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and minimize future recurrence of symptoms through controlled movements and exercises.

What conditions can the McKenzie Method treat?

The McKenzie Method is effective for treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, and ankle pain. It focuses on identifying mechanical issues within the musculoskeletal system and creating a personalized treatment plan to address these conditions without relying on medication or surgery.

First time at Ivy Rehab, and my son who normally doesn't do well in new places and new people, met Ms. Rachel and he was immediately engaged and playing and talking with her. She was so sweet and welcoming and immediately accommodated his obsession with trains and animals. Even the random staff members we interacted with were so kind and engaging with all the kids here. It was really a great positive experience. So glad we found this place

I'm on my second round of PT with Tyler and his team of pros. First round we got my partially torn achilles back into fighting shape, now we're rehabbing my shoulder after rotator cuff surgery. This is a great facility, skilled team of people all the way around and very attuned to getting me back into my athletic lifestyle!

I cannot recommend Karen from the New Hyde Park office highly enough. Over the past several weeks, she has been instrumental in helping me overcome a balance disorder that was significantly impacting my daily life.

Karen's expertise and personalized approach made all the difference in my recovery. She took the time to thoroughly assess my condition, explained each exercise and technique in a way I could understand and created a treatment plan specifically tailored to my needs.

What impressed me most was Karen's genuine investment in my recovery. She carefully monitored my progress and adjusted my treatment as needed. Thanks to her skilled care and dedication, I've regained my balance and confidence in ways I wasn't sure were possible.

Karen is an outstanding physical therapist, and I feel fortunate to have worked with her. Any patient would be lucky to receive care from someone so knowledgeable, compassionate, and committed to achieving real results.

We have only been going here for 2 weeks and it already fits perfectly. Our therapists have been absolutely wonderful and so welcoming. My son already seems to be making progress. This group goes the extra mile to make your little feel special. I would recommend them 100%.
After my shoulder surgery, when I had to pick a place to go for my PT, I wasn’t sure where to go. I really was only aware of the chain places, like ATI and Athletico. But I couldn’t drive for about a month so I chose PTSIR in Orland Park because I thought, if for some reason my wife was not available to drive me, it’s only about a 2 mile walk. I could do that.

Sometimes you’re smart and sometimes you’re just lucky. Here I was lucky. This place, and these people, are outstanding. Personable, professional, & proficient in the science/art of PT. People had told me: “keep up with your therapy. You’re gonna hate it but you gotta keep going.” I got news for you. I didn’t hate it. I actually enjoyed it.
Why?
1. It’s working. I have about 75% mobility & strength back in my shoulder.
2. These people, Melanie & Linda, they are so engaged in your situation and your progress and so friendly that we actually have conversations and laugh. It’s hard sometimes to show your vulnerabilities (even tho it’s a result of surgery) to strangers. They made it easy.

I went to another place about 18 months ago, before surgery was decided. And they were good…friendly, seemed competent. But not nearly as engaged or invested in how I was progressing. Again, they were fine. But on a scale of 1 to Mel, they were like a 2.

So thank you Linda for being so friendly and open and helpful. And thank you Mel. You have been simply wonderful.
i literally tell everyone i love coming to physical therapy. i came here after my first hip labrum repair surgery and i came back after getting the same surgery on my other hip. i see Megan she’s super knowledgeable and fun to work with. everyone who works here is so nice and i love the community feel of the space. coming here whenever i need the care !

When you first walk into Ivy Rehab, you are greeted with a huge smile and kindness from Shannon. She has been an amazing asset to both my progress and the center itself.

Due to a diagnosis of advanced degenerative disc disease, and advanced osteoarthritis, I will have continuous future surgeries, and require continuous Physical Therapy. Having been mandated in the past to conduct post surgical physical therapy within the institution where my surgery took place, I can honestly speak to the differences in terms of quality of care.

I have worked with Kevin Sandborn for the last year. His willingness to both communicate and listen, has, and will continue to be, a critical part to my continued progress. He literally saved my life by helping me to learn to walk again after 2 severe spine injuries and emergency surgeries.

When given the option as to where I want to have physical therapy, Ivy Rehab is the only place to where I will go. This is truly a 5 ⭐️ Treatment Facility,
with 5 ⭐️ Humans.
I had a great experience here thanks to Megan, my awesome physical therapist, and the rest of the team. Megan was fantastic—super knowledgeable and always encouraging. The whole staff is not only professional but also really fun and supportive. Highly recommend this place if you’re dealing with an injury!

I just finished up 10+ weeks of physical therapy at Ivy Rehab in Monroe and could not be happier with my experience. Matt, Olivia and Amanda are the PT dream team! I started with Matt who did my initial evaluation and I immediately knew I was in good hands. He listened to me, he got was I was saying, and he created a custom program to fit my needs. I am really active (weight lifting and running) and it was really important to me to get back to my active lifestyle. My injury is known to have a slow healing process, but I was seeing improvements each week following Matt’s plan, so I was motivated to stick with it. I also got to work with Olivia a number of times and it was so helpful to work with a fellow runner and fitness fanatic. Amanda oversees the front desk and all of the administrative stuff runs so smoothly because of her attention to detail and customer service skills. I am doing so much better now and back to my life and active lifestyle. And, they gave me a great post-PT plan to follow with exercises that will help me avoid re-injury. Go to Ivy Rehab in Monroe for experienced physical therapists who are invested in your success and fantastic, friendly customer service.

AK and Yaya are the best! They understand my pain issues and take the time to explain what is happening and what I can do daily to keep my legs working! And best of all they helped accommodate my crazy schedule so I can get my sessions in.

Ivy Rehab Monroe is amazing! My 8 year old was treated and Matt Fleming and his staff could not have been better. They were so kind and patient with her, and they explained everything to us in detail that was easy to follow and understand. My daughter excelled so well in their care, she graduated her treatment a few appointments early. I will be suggesting Ivy Rehab Monroe to everyone I know and will use them again in the future if ever needed!

Initially apprehensive, my first PT to treat pain/soreness in hip and pelvic region and I was not disappointed. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable, patient and friendly. After just 1 appointment, Kevin was able to gently work out most, if not all, of the discomfort I'd been feeling. Much more comfortable than I had expected. Problems haven't returned since last visit a few months ago, but I sure know where to go if they do. They are very understanding and accommodating when it comes to my schedule. My only regret is that I can only give them 5 stars.
ABC Pediatric Therapy is amazing! They are so caring, patient, understanding, and supportive through my baby girl’s PT and helping her with her gross motor skills. Jon Ross is awesome and we highly recommend him! He is always so compassionate and caring and focused on developing a therapy plan specific to our daughter and she has done great and is now caught up with her peers! We cannot thank him enough for the time and effort he has shown to us. This place is wonderful!

After just a handful of visits to Excel and working with Aaron and Jon and the staff, I am already feeling stronger and excited to commit to my recovery with their expertise and encouragement. Aaron has already gone above and beyond during sessions to truly understand my injury and source of discomfort and to give realistic progression expectations. Their interactions with me and other patients in the office has been caring, professional and knowledgeable. It is a truly well-staffed, well-run operation and I highly recommend.

I love it there! This was my 2nd total knee replacement and I was so worried about PT b/c of my very bad experience elsewhere but the whole staff at Ivy is wonderful, attentive and makes you getting healed their top priority.

My PT is Joe – he's amazing and all through PT he has created an atmosphere and program where I'm heard, safe, motivated and cared about.

Everyone go to IVY rehab PT

I took my daughter here for 2 months and Hannah was amazing with my daughter . She never wanted to leave . I really felt like she was able to understand my daughter. So sad that we had to transfer to a location closer to home. But if this location is near you I 100% recommend Hannah and Erica . They are amazing .

I had a wonderful experience at Ivy Rehab – Fort Greene / Downtown BK location. I went to them over a period of several months for 2 different issues – back and IT band. Matt, Sophia, Damas and all the other PTs, staff, assistants/students were knowledgeable, kind, patient, good listeners, pushed me to my limits. I felt that they cared about me and were invested in my recovery. The facility is very clean, spacious and conveniently located. I highly recommend Ivy Rehab and this location specifically for any PT needs you might have.

Working on the knees to get stronger before a replacement this December. Lauren has been my physical therapist and she has given me complete confidence and the knowledge I need to make a complete recovery after surgery. Was never a fan or a believer in physical therapy until this past month. I strongly recommend an urge you do it and come see Lauren if you decide to try PT she is great. Manny and Giancarlo are also great and will help you any way that they can

I see Rachel at Ivy Rehab in Fishers, but I've also had some sessions with Kevin as well. I highly recommend both of them. This was my first time having to go to physical therapy and Shannon makes it easy to understand my insurance benefits and they have a lot of flexibility in their schedule so its easy to make time for appointments. I have been dealing with a hip issue, a labral tear and FAI, and working with Rachel makes living with it virtually pain free. I've been very pleased with my progress over the last few months and I really feel like I'm being listened to when it comes to my therapy goals.
