Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich swelling occurs, usually in an arm or leg. It occurs as a result of damage or malfunction within the lymphatic system, commonly after surgery, radiation therapy, or trauma.

Healthy skin helps protect your lymphatic system and reduces the risk of infection. Even small cuts or irritation can lead to complications, so daily care matters. Focus on keeping your skin clean, moisturized, and protected:

Taking a few minutes each day for skin care can go a long way in protecting your health and preventing complications.

Consistently managing swelling helps prevent worsening symptoms and supports better long-term outcomes. Compression and routine care can make a meaningful difference day to day. Build these habits into your routine:

Consistent swelling management helps your body function more comfortably and can reduce flare-ups over time.

Extreme temperatures can trigger or worsen swelling and irritation. Being mindful of your environment helps protect sensitive areas and keeps symptoms more stable. Try to limit exposure to the following:

Being mindful of temperature changes can help you avoid unnecessary irritation and better control your symptoms.

Staying active is important, but balance is key. Gradual progress and body awareness can help you stay safe while maintaining strength and mobility. Keep these guidelines in mind:

A balanced approach to activity and lifestyle can help you stay active while protecting your body long term.

FAQs

What are the symptoms and causes of lymphedema?

Common symptoms of lymphedema include swelling of a body part, typically an arm or leg, a sensation of heaviness or tightness, limited mobility, and changes in the skin. These lymphedema symptoms result from an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid due to a compromised lymphatic system. Common causes of lymphedema include cancer treatments such as surgery or radiation, trauma, infection, or congenital conditions. Recognizing early signs and seeking care from a certified lymphedema therapist can support better long-term management.

What is Complete Decongestive Therapy, and how does it help?

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard for lymphedema management. This multi-phase treatment includes manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, skin care, and therapeutic exercise. A specially trained, certified lymphedema physical therapist (PT) will personalize the program to reduce swelling, improve functional status, and support long-term recovery. If you notice increased swelling, CDT can provide targeted relief and restore comfort and mobility.

Who treats lymphedema, and is it covered by insurance?

Lymphedema is often treated by physical and occupational therapists who specialize in lymphatic disorders. A certified lymphedema therapist uses hands-on techniques, compression, and guided movement strategies to treat symptoms and reduce the risk of lymphedema worsening. While there is currently no cure for lymphedema, early intervention supports better outcomes. Many health care plans offer coverage for medically necessary physical therapy sessions for lymphedema management—contact your provider to confirm your benefits.

In August 2024, I suffered a pretty significant herniation of my L5-S1 disc. Due to the variability and general severity of back injuries like this, my doctors weren't willing to guarantee I'd ever return to the level of physical activity I was at prior to the injury—weight training and casual sport on a weekly basis. For the first nine or ten months of my recovery, I had non-stop nerve pain down my left leg into my foot. It was extremely debilitating. I started at a PT clinic almost immediately after my injury, and made some early gains as we did some basic strengthening. But it didn't take long for me to stall out almost completely. One month, then two months went by and rather than making steady progress, I was actually losing ground—my pain was increasing again. I felt extremely defeated. I checked back in with my rehab doctor and he recommended I try Ivy Rehab. He lectures there from time to time and vouched for the standard of care. I wanted to find a place where I could get more 1-1 attention. My previous clinic had maybe 4-5 patients to a PT at a given time. Things were very different at Ivy. Dr. Matthew Macina & Dr. Damas Istrophe are incredibly attentive. From the start, our focus was on the activities and movements that caused me the most pain (such as sitting in a car). They did some manual manipulation to help unknot my left side which had seized up from the pain, and then lots of focused strength and conditioning work to help me support my lower back. Soon I was jogging—which had previously seemed unfathomable—and not long after that I was starting a workup to a golf swing. As an avid golfer who was told he may never golf again, this was a pretty massive achievement. I still have a long way to go, but the fantastic staff at Ivy Rehab have given me hope that I can avoid surgery and get back not just to day to day functionality, but athletic activity.

The therapists(especially Miss Bekah!!!) are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated to helping every child reach their fullest potential. They take the time to understand each child’s unique needs and always communicate clearly and kindly with families. We’ve seen such wonderful progress, and my child actually looks forward to every session—a true testament to how fun, engaging, and effective the therapy is. I can’t say enough about this place and their staff! I am currently rehabbing from my 3rd injury/condition over the the last calendar year and the high level of service provided here hasn’t wavered since my first time in the door. The equipment and people are top notch and they’ll be sure to get you back on track and on your way to good health with a variety of exercises and techniques. Thanks again PTW Montgomeryville!
PTW is the place to go for physical therapy. They are professional, friendly and the therapy treatment is excellent. They refer to everyone by your first name and make you feel like their friend. Lauren is a excellent therapist. Keep up the good work guys.
In March of 2018 I was diagnosed with male breast cancer that has been certified as 9-11 related. On April 17th 2018 I had a double mastectomy to remove the cancerous tumors from my chest. My arms and chest were totally immobile and swollen. As the swelling subsided I desperately wanted to get my range of motion back. I am a triathlete and an avid golfer and bowler. Thinking that I was never going to be able to perform those sports like I did before my surgery was depressing and always in the back of my mind. But instead of waiting around to see how it all turned out I decided to take action. I sought the help of Excel Physical Therapy. They have a great reputation and a local office in my town of Oakland. I met with Jeff Ziegler whom I knew from the Triathlon world in the area. I chose him because he being an athlete understood my concerns. After working with Jeff for about 6 weeks I was able to attend my annual golf trip and play multiple rounds pain free. Not only that but I’m now training for a triathlon and bowling twice a week in my bowling leagues. I even bowled a perfect game in November. Something I thought would never happen again. I can’t thank Jeff and Excel enough for getting me back to my pre surgery days. They truly understand the athlete in every one of us.
After several years of treatment, for multiple injuries, I have faith and confidence in everyone at the Blue Bell South office. I recommend them without hesitation.

I was in a car accident and was injured, Aaron, Jonathon, Josh, Ebonie, And Emily were a pleasure to work with. Insurances, scheduling and working with PT's in the appointments themselves were great. I was treated for a couple months, and I feel better than ever. They are truly a great rehabilitation facility and are amazing people.

I have been to a lot of different rehab clinics in my time. This is the BEST rehab clinic I have ever been to! The therapist explains why and how they will do your rehab. It is very clean and the atmosphere is positive. The therapist are the most knowledgeable and best I have ever had work on me. Yes there is pain when you do the exercises but no pain no gain. I look forward to going and getting better. They have a receptionist that is very nice and makes you feel welcome. She schedules your appointments and does her best to get you in at your convenience. As you can probably tell I cannot say enough good about Ivy Rehab.
Want to treat your pain? Want to improve your range of motion? Then you want Ivy Rehab in Rhinebeck. The staff is very professional, very welcoming and always responsive to your needs.
We have been coming to ABC for 4 years for my sons cerebral palsy and hemiparesis. The therapists are knowledgeable, caring and kind. They are able to accommodate our schedule and my son has made huge progress. They are amazing!!! We love Miss Julie, Miss Sarah and Miss Sydney!
Response from the owner:Thank you Michelle! You have a great team!
Jalina is the best PT we have come across in our 5.5 years of physical therapy for our daughter. She thinks outside of the “textbook” and sees my daughter for who she is and what she needs verses our past PTs who insist upon “what has always worked.” We are so grateful for finding her!

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the team at Ivy Rehab in Moorestown, NJ lead by Tanner Kerr, DPT (Rachel, Zachary, Chris, Laura). I cannot speak highly enough of this practice. All the staff are very knowledgeable and provide genuine care for their patients. They changed-up my routine and kept me challenged as I progressed through therapy sessions and even showed me what I can do at home to help myself. Thanks to everyone at this practice, I can feel strength and mobility coming back 100%! 5-stars!!!

Fantastic staff! Just in the few short weeks I’ve been coming I feel so much better and more confident with my knee. Taylor, Shailen , and Dom are all amazing PTs. Definitely making me work for it, but I couldn’t be more grateful to work with a team that takes my goals into consideration!
This is definitely the best place I’ve been to for PT! I have done vestibular therapy and therapy for plantar fasciitis here, and have seen great results with both issues! Lauren and Mark are both super friendly, compassionate, and knowledgeable therapists! They have a lot of great equipment and their clinical staff are equally as amazing! I would absolutely recommend this location!
Ethan has been an amazing PT – helping me get mobility and functioning back in my broken right wrist. My program has evolved and he’s provided me with a program I can also do at home as healing progresses. Everyone in the office is friendly and welcoming!

My son was in speech therapy at Ivy Rehab and I would recommend them in a heartbeat. Everyone in this office is so friendly and makes their patients and families feel welcome. Sabrina and Rachel are incredible speech therapists and thanks to them my son hit so many milestones and had fun doing it. As a parent it's the best feeling to know you can rely on a great team to help your child reach their full potential.

Highly recommend Ivy Rehab Kokomo. After surgery for a torn meniscus, I continued to experience pain and limited mobility. My physician recommended PT and I chose Ivy. I could not be more happy with my decision. My therapist, Tyler Schoolman, is the best. He listened carefully to my concerns as well as my goals and tailored a plan which kept my PT challenging and effective. I especially liked that my therapy visits were not merely a repeat of the previous visit. Mixing up the various exercises have brought me to a pain-free place of strength and confidence as my balance has improved significantly. The techs and staff are pleasant and helpful and the state-of-the-art facility is bright and welcoming. I love that at Ivy I was able to get individual attention and did not feel like just one of many appointments on the schedule. Tyson Schoolman and the staff at Ivy Rehab exceeded my expectations. I will definitely return should I need PT in the future.
I haven’t been going very long but the care there is wonderful. The ladies that work with me listen to my concerns and are very proactive with fixing the issues I’m having! Danielle and Grace are my Absolute favorite!

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Always willing to listen and offer good advice. Have worked with David over the past 2-3 months and he has been an excellent and personable therapist. They have serviced 3 members of my family and all were extremely happy. Thank you all. Joan K
