FAQs

Do I need a physician referral to start neurologic physical therapy at Ivy Rehab?

In many states, you can see a physical therapist without a physician’s referral for an initial evaluation and treatment—a concept known as direct access. However, some insurance plans, corporate policies, or state regulations may still require a referral or limit treatment duration without one.

Because requirements can vary, the best next step is to contact your nearest Ivy Rehab clinic. Our team can verify your benefits, explain any referral requirements, and help you schedule your first appointment so you can get started with neurologic physical therapy as soon as possible.

How is neurologic physical therapy different from regular physical therapy?

Neurologic physical therapy is a specialty focused on conditions caused by diseases or injuries of the nervous system, rather than primarily orthopedic or sports-related issues. Neurologic physical therapists receive advanced training in how the brain, spinal cord, and nerves affect movement, gait, and balance, cognition, and activities of daily living.

Because of this specialized training, they are skilled at treating symptoms such as weakness, loss of sensation, changes in muscle tone, instability, and coordination problems that may not respond to standard exercise programs alone. They use techniques that promote neuroplasticity and help retrain the nervous system for more efficient, safer movement.

How long will I need neurologic physical therapy?

The length of neurologic physical therapy varies for each person and depends on factors such as your diagnosis, whether your condition is acute or chronic, the severity of your symptoms and impairments, and your individual goals. Some patients attend therapy for a shorter period to address a specific neurologic event, while others benefit from longer-term or intermittent care to manage progressive conditions.

What happens during a typical neurologic PT session?

A typical neurologic physical therapy session often begins with a brief check-in on your symptoms, daily activities, and how you responded to the previous visit and home exercises. Your therapist will then guide you through a combination of hands-on treatments, balance and gait activities, strengthening and flexibility exercises, and neuromuscular re-education tailored to your abilities that day.

You may also practice specific activities of daily living, such as transfers or stair climbing, and review strategies to improve safety at home. At the end of each session, your therapist may update your home exercise program so you can continue making progress between visits.

Alison was thorough, professional and overall very nice. Each communication I’ve had with Ivy has been excellent. Everyone is polite and very professional.

Angela, Anna and Jade worked together to rehab my shoulder after my shoulder replacement. They were all really knowledgeable and answered all my questions. After 14 weeks, going twice a week, I completed my rehab. It’s a difficult rehab. One needs their knowledge, because there are weekly schedules to follow, so that you don’t ruin the surgery. I am in debt to them and I would recommend Ivyland Rehab Blue Bell for any PT needs. Thank ladies! You are the best!!

I am beyond very happy with the progress I have been able to achieve with the assistance and guidance of Olivia Bruck, my physical therapist, at Ivy Rehab. I have been given the utmost guidance and professional care for several months during my recovery! Everyone, from Amanda at the front desk to Matt, the other physical therapist, is extremely accommodating! Each is very supportive, caring, and strives to address each individual's needs. I recommend this physical rehab facility to anyone recovering from an injury and in need of treatment!!! Sharon Thomas

They take their time to make sure you know what you are doing, why you are doing it and how to do it correctly, so you get the most benefit without risking more injury. I have found that the smallest details when exercising correctly seem to have the most impact on the area being targeted.

I spent 5 months in PT following hip surgery, and Synergy was the best clinic I could have chosen! (I've been to other clinics that weren't quite as good.) All of the staff are kind, helpful and knowledgeable. They go out of their way to problem-solve and truly care about your progress and outcomes. I would be happy to go back to Synergy if I needed therapy again.

Absolutely loved the experience here! Front desk was excellent in scheduling my mom. The doctor was very knowledgeable and helped my mother a ton. It is very helpful that the therapist also spoke Spanish to avoid translation services. The assistant would also try her best effort to talk Spanish as well. Overall I would rate 10 stars if I could!!

Amazing therapy office for kids!! My son received speech therapy and occupational therapy here and absolutely loves it. Throws a fit when it's time to leave. They are also amazing with scheduling.
Response from the owner:Thank you Sabrina!
I sing the praises of Ivy Rehab in Fishers to anyone who will listen to me! Kevin Sanborn is the best! He is very skilled, knowledgeable, gentle and understanding of my knee situation. He is a good listener, and very easy to talk to. His take home exercise plan is spot on! The exercises we did during my appointments were very helpful and also are useful at home. He answered my many questions with out fail. I was also able to work with Conner, another therapist, twice. Both sessions were very helpful. I added a couple of his exercises to my home exercise plan. The Fishers facility is large, bright and very well equipped. I was always greeted with a smile from Shannon. She kept me on track with appointment reminders and any questions I had. Try them out! You won't be disappointed!!!
The staff is eager to help with the necessary therapy. I had my knee replaced six years ago and they helped me get back to normal walking. This time it is the left hip and already I am feeling better!
Response from the owner:Pat- thank you so much for your kind words. We are happy that you chose us for both your knee and hip recoveries!!
I can't say enough about the exceptional Ivy Rehab team in Hoboken. I came here for PT following elbow surgery. From my initial phone call with Liz, the entire Ivy team was helpful, personable, professional and encouraging. A big shout to t Liz, Nicole, Jerry, Gracie, Crystal, Alexis and of course Anthony (and anyone else I've forgotten). Thank you all for the helping me through the healing process to get back to normal! And best of luck to the other patients I met. You're in good hands!

I went to Excel Therapy to recover from a knee dislocation. Aaron, Josh, and the whole Excel team tailored a program specifically to my injury, from alleviating pain to regaining mobility. Within two months, I went from not being able to climb stairs to resuming all sports & activities. Not only did they help me recover, but set me up with a program to further strengthen my knees to prevent any future injuries. I truly enjoyed every session there, and am grateful for all the treatment/instruction they gave me.

I came here for a serious knee injury after a ski accident. I had 2 plates 9 screws in my knee. Huge shoutout to Tarry who I mostly worked with who really pushed me. Because of him I am almost at full knee ROM before 6 weeks post op. He explained to me how critical it was to push myself to get the flexion back early and I am glad he did even though it was painful at times. Though I switched clinics eventually due to logistical reasons I know my recovery was off to a strong start with Tarry.

The staff is truly welcoming and friendly. Out of all of the Physical Therapy offices I’ve been to, this is by far the nicest environment. They are very clean and sanitize all of their equipment. The take the time to stay up to date with holiday decorations that add to the atmosphere. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a peaceful, supportive recovery. 🙂
